Red Rock Casino Stabbing Suspect Identified, Charged for Violent Attacks

The accused slasher of two employees at Summerlin, Nev.’s Red Rock casino was charged over the weekend on multiple counts as victims received hospital treatment.

The stabber was identified as Shayne Sussman, 25.

He was was arrested on three attempted murder with the use of a deadly weapon or tear gas charges, as well as four counts of battery with the use of a deadly weapon, and a single count of battery with the use of a deadly weapon, resulting in substantial bodily harm, according to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD).

On Saturday morning, Sussman allegedly stabbed at least two individuals at the Red Rock Casino Resort and Spa located off of Charleston Boulevard. Guests and others hid underneath tables as the violence unfolded in the casino, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

The two unnamed casino workers were injured and rushed to University Medical Center (UMC). Sussman was shot by a casino security guard and was transported to UMC for treatment.

Rumored Victims

He was booked at Clark County Detention Center on Saturday, according to online jail records. If he’s physically able, Sussman is scheduled to appear in local court on Tuesday.

It’s unclear if more than two victims were stabbed during the attack. Based on an initial report, Vital Vegas reported that two stabbing victims were a security guard and a maintenance director. That information had not been confirmed by the LVMPD nor by casino officials as of Monday.

Another initial report by Vital Vegas revealed the suspect had been using drugs in a restroom at the casino, then threatened guests, and was ordered to leave the gaming property. The stabbings followed. This sequence of events hasn’t been confirmed by officials as of Monday.

Counselors Available to Workers

Over the weekend, employees at Red Rock were “shaken up” by the confrontation, Las Vegas TV station KLAS reported, citing an internal memo from Red Rock Vice President and General Manager Scott Nelson.

We are grateful for the swift and decisive actions of our security team, which prevented a terrible incident from being much worse,” the memo said.

“The safety and security of our team members and guests is and will always be our highest priority. Our thoughts and prayers are with our affected team members — please join us in wishing them a quick and complete recovery.”

In addition, Nelson told employees, “We recognize that such a traumatic incident may create concerns of wellbeing and some of our team members may need support on processing the event. Therefore, we will offer counseling service to people who may be in need of assistance. Additionally, team members will be provided with information on typical responses to trauma, coping strategies, and ways to support each other.”

Counselors from the Employee Assistance Program were available in the Red Rock training room.

“We strongly encourage any affected team member to take advantage of this service,” Nelson said. “With our strong family spirit, we will pull through this together… Please do not hesitate to speak with your manager or Human Resources with any questions or concerns.”
