Tiger Woods and Peyton Manning are the favorites in a charity golf match against their sport rivals Phil Mickelson and Tom Brady. The event is set to take place next month.
Turner Sports, which will air the event live on TNT next month, confirmed the match is on.
“It’s official: Tiger Woods, Peyton Manning, Phil Mickelson, and Tom Brady all on one golf course. The Match: Champions for Charity is coming soon exclusively on TNT. All proceeds will benefit COVID-19 relief,” the network said.
With sports nonexistent in the US because of the pandemic, the news is much welcomed to oddsmakers who have little to offer customers.
The Westgate SuperBook in Las Vegas opened its odds at Woods/Manning -150, and Mickelson/Brady +130. A $100 winning bet would respectively net $66.67 and $130.
Jeff Sherman, golf oddsmaker for the Westgate SuperBook in Las Vegas, said “props, props, props” are coming soon.
Trash Talking Begins
This will be the second time that Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson dueled in a special match. Their last came in November of 2018, when the two squared off in a winner-take-all $9 million showdown at Shadow Creek in Las Vegas.
Woods was the favorite in “The Match” at -200, but Lefty pulled off the upset on the fourth extra hole to return $200 for every $100 wagered. Though this time their match is slightly different, as they will have a playing partner and the money is going to coronavirus relief, there will still be plenty of friendly banter.
There has been a little bit of trash talk already, a little bit of banter back and forth,” Woods said. “Whether it’s, ‘I might need extra caddies to carry my Super Bowls,’ because he has more Super Bowls than my partner. Or, ‘I’ve got more majors than Phil, so I’m going to have to have a truck come up to the first tee and U-Haul it out.'”
There is no official word as to where the match will occur, but Florida is a leading candidate. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) has been one of the more aggressive governors in reopening his state, and recently deemed the WWE an essential business.
Woods lives in Jupiter, Florida, some 90 miles north of Miami.
Manning, Brady Golf Games
Peyton Manning and Tom Brady are two of the greatest quarterbacks in NFL history. But how are their golf games?
According to the USGA’s Golf Handicap Information Network (GHIN), Manning has a 6.4 handicap index. His five most recent scores were 83-88-82-86-84. He’s a member of the private Cherry Hills Country Club in suburban Denver, Colorado.
Brady has played out of the ultra-exclusive The Country Club in Brookline, Massachusetts. He sports an 8.1 handicap index, and his five most recent scores were 96-86-93-83-85.
Golfweek says the average handicap in America for a male golfer is about 16.
